Microsoft has announced that it will stop supporting Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 after the operating system's end of support on October 14, 2025.

This cutoff means businesses and consumers relying on Microsoft 365 apps will need to upgrade to Windows 11 to continue receiving support.

What Happens When Support Ends?

Although Microsoft 365 apps will continue to function after Windows 10 support ends, Microsoft warns that users may encounter performance and reliability issues over time. The apps will not abruptly stop working, but the lack of official support could lead to potential challenges.

Encouraging Windows 11 Adoption

  • Microsoft is actively encouraging users to transition to Windows 11.
  • The company has designated 2025 as the “year of the Windows 11 PC refresh.”
  • At the recent CES event, Microsoft executives emphasized the importance of upgrading old Windows 10 PCs.
  • They positioned upgrading to Windows 11 as a higher priority than purchasing new gadgets like TVs or phones in 2025.

Despite this push, Windows 11 adoption has been slow, and many devices cannot upgrade to the new OS due to hardware requirements.

Microsoft’s TPM 2.0 requirement for Windows 11 has been a significant barrier, and the company has been encouraging users to buy new PCs, often through full-screen prompts.

Extended Security Updates for Windows 10

For those who cannot immediately upgrade, Microsoft will offer Extended Security Updates (ESU) for the first time to consumers. Consumers can purchase one extra year of updates for $30, while businesses can buy up to three additional years of security updates.

This initiative aims to ease the transition for users who are still on Windows 10, but Microsoft’s overall strategy is clear: users are encouraged to make the switch to Windows 11 as soon as possible.
